Isidro Sanchez was born in Mexico in January 1855. His mother, Felipa Sanchez, was unwed when he was born and the identity of his father is not available. His immigration date to the United States is not known, but by 1877 he was living in the Fort Stockton area. He married Teodora Hinojos September 30, 1877, probably in Fort Stockton. By 1900 Isidro had moved his family to San Vicente, where he worked as a farmer. He maintained between 8 and 12 horses or mules and 110 to 200 goats in the early years of the 1900’s. Probably in 1902 he purchased Survey 6 of Block 18, a 640 acre tract valued at $480.00 in state and local tax records. Isidro had become a U.S. Citizen by the time he moved to San Vicente. His wife Teodora died soon after their arrival.

Cresencio married Leandra Picasso, his brother Julian’s widow, on September 9, 1921. There apparently were no children by this marriage and she died a few years later. In 1925 Cresencio married Domitila Yharte, daughter of Adolfo Yharte and Wencelada Macias. She was born in San Vicente May 1, 1904. The story of this wedding is part of the lore of the Lower Big Bend.
The date for the big event was set for November 10, 1925. Since both parties were from well-known families who were long-time residents of San Vicente, the guest list was quite large. The day of the wedding arrived and large numbers of guests assembled for the festive occasion. Missing from the gathered masses, however, was one key participant, the priest. Not wanting to disappoint the bride and groom and the guests, Mr. Fred Rice, owner of the Grapevine Springs Ranch and Cresencio’s employer, was pressed into service to perform the wedding. Unable to find a Bible, Fred instead used a Sear’s catalogue. He read a few advertisements in English (which few of the people understood) and then solemnly pronounced the couple man and wife. Everybody seemed quite happy and the celebration and dancing continued well into the night. The priest, Father Julius Gremaud from St. Agnes Catholic Church in Terlingua, did show up a week later to make the whole thing legitimate and the wedding was officially recorded in the church records as having occurred on November 17, 1925(c).
Cresencio maintained a farm at San Vicente, but also worked seasonally for area ranchers. He had the reputation of being an exceptionally good cowboy and bronc buster. Cresencio and Domitila eventually moved to Marathon. Cresencio was a resident of Marathon when he died of an acute myocardial infraction in Big Bend Memorial Hospital, Alpine on May 23, 1976. Domitila died January 26, 1997. They are buried together in the Marathon Cemetery.
