A Tribute to Monico Garcia and Luz Chavez Garcia
by Granddaughter Mary Lerma Holguin
To my grandfather Monico who exemplifies love transcended,
and to my grandmother Luz, who smiles at me from above.
The legacy I can and want to give my family and the following generations of our family is a history of their family roots. It is very important that you are proud of where you come from and of your parents. You are today what you inherited, what passed through the genes, good or bad. Many of you inherited long lives and good health, as our grandparents did.
Monico and Luz met at a baile in Lajitas. The moment he saw her he knew it was love at first sight. She was so young. Time went on and they saw each other more. In his mind this was the woman that he would court and marry have his family with.
They got married November 4, 1909. She was 18, he was 21. He was born in Fort Davis, Texas. She was born in Ojinaga, Chihuahua, Mexico. He and his brothers had a mail route between Terlingua and Alpine, Texas, and later he worked in the Terlingua quicksilver mines.
Years later they decided to move to New Mexico. They left Terlingua in a Ford convertible. They arrived in Jalisco, New Mexico and found work picking cotton. They lived in a pitch tent. Later they moved to a ranch just outside Loving, New Mexico. They farmed for years.
In the 1940’s, Grandpa went to work on the loading dock at the U.S. Refinery. He also opened and operated a grocery store with his oldest son Primitivo. The store was named Garcia grocery. He retired from the refinery in 1958. They were members of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.
Grandma passed away September 16, 1972 at the age of 81, and Grandpa on January 13,1980 at the age of 92.
My Grandparents raised me and I am so proud of them.
I pray I will have their wisdom.
We were blessed to have had them that long.
