Gregorio Marufo was born in Mexico in March 1856. He immigrated to the United States in 1881 and married Natividad Fierro circa 1882. She was born in Mexico circa 1863. They settled initially in Presidio, where at least five children were born. By1900 they were living in a rented house in Marathon Village with four children. In the 1900 census, Gregorio’s occupation is shown as “laborer”. The 1900 and 1910 census records both indicate that the couple had 7 other children, all born before 1900, who did not survive.
Probably soon after 1900 Gregorio and his family moved to San Vicente, where he acquired Section 10 of Block 18. State land records show “G. Marrufo” as the original owner of this section. In the 1910 census, Gregorio’s occupation is shown as “farmer, general farm”. By this time three additional children had been born. The oldest surviving son, Jesus was now married, but he, his wife, and son were still living with his parents.
