Canuto Bustamante was born November 1, 1856 in Mexico. He was the son of Tomas Bustamante and Petronila Acosta. He probably lived in Camargo, Chihuahua, Mexico. His brother Gabriel was baptized there in 1860, as was his first child in 1890. Circa 1880 he married Felipa Roman, the daughter of Vicente and Felipa Roman. Canuto and Felipa had seven children, all born in Mexico. In 1911 Canuto and his family immigrated to the United States and settled in the Terlingua area, where Canuto and all of his sons worked in the quicksilver mines. By 1930 he and Felipa had moved to Alpine where he died November 10, 1931. Felipa died in Alpine June 12, 1947 in Alpine. Both are buried in the Alpine Cemetery. Canuto and Felipa’s children were:
1. Daughter Maria Bustamante was born in Mexico and was baptized in Santa Rosalia, Camargo, Chihuahua, Mexico November 26, 1890. Circa 1912 she married Nasario Olivas, a farmer living in the vicinity of Castolon. He came to the United States in 1903 and in 1919 was working as a tenant farmer for the La Harmonia Co. at Castolon. Nasario had been married previously to Soledad Ontiveros and they had five children:
A. Son Guadalupe Olivas was born circa 1898 in Mexico. In September and October 1916 he was employed part time for the Study Butte Mining Co., working on the furnace crew for $1.00 to $1.50 per shift. In 1920 he was living with his father in the Castolon area where he was working as a general laborer.
B. Son Manuel Olivas was born in Mexico circa 1902. In 1920 he was living with his father in the Castolon area where he was working as a general laborer.
C. Daughter Sara Olivas was born December 17, 1904 in Texas. She was baptized in Terlingua by Father Brocardus February 27, 1905. Her godparents were Liberado and Leandra Garcia. In 1920 she was living in the Castolon area with her father.
D. Daughter Isabel Olivas was born July 8, 1906 in Texas. She was baptized September 26, 1906 in Terlingua by Father Brocardus. His godparents were Isaac Sanchez and Carmen Castaneda. In 1920 she was living with her father in the Castolon area. Circa 1931 she married Abram Avila, a miner. In October 1928, while working for Chisos Mining Co. (employee #660) he mashed his finger and missed work for two days. In February 1930 he fell 18 to 20 feet while trying to catch coworkers after his lamp stopped burning. He was off for five weeks because of that accident. Isabel and Adam had one child:
(1). Daughter Paz Avila was born February 2, 1933 in Brewster County.
E. Daughter Anita Olivas was born July 26, 1908 in Terlingua. She was baptized in Chisos September 30, 1908 by Father Brocardus. Her godparents were Jose White and Carmen Castaneda. Maria Bustamante and Nasario Olivas had four children:
A. Son Florentino Olivas was born circa 1913 in Texas. In 1920 he was living in the Castolon area with his parents and in 1930 he was living in Alpine with his maternal grandparents. In 1934 he was working for the Chisos Mining Co.
B. Daughter Paula Olivas was born circa 1914 in Texas and in 1920 she was living with her parents in the Castolon area. She died of pneumonia November 24, 1940 in Alpine and was buried there the following day. Her married name was Marcus.
C. Son Timoteo Olivas was born in Castolon January 24, 1916. He was baptized in Chisos April 23, 1916 by Father M. Cuadrado. His godparents were Manuel Bustamante and Magdalena Hernandez. In 1920 he was living with his parents in the Castolon area and in 1930 he was living with his maternal grandparents in Alpine. In 1934 he was employed by the Chisos Mining Co. He died of Tuberculosis in Alpine May 20, 1940 and was buried there the following day.
D. Daughter Elidriata Olivas was born in Texas circa 1918 and was living with her parents in the Castolon area in 1920. The name is as shown in the 1920 census, which is the only record of her.

D. Daughter Elidriata Olivas was born in Texas circa 1918 and was living with her parents in the Castolon area in 1920. The name is as shown in the 1920 census, which is the only record of her.
2. Son Manuel Bustamante was born in Mexico October 15, 1892 and immigrated to the United States with his family in 1911. From 1911 to 1925 he lived in the Terlingua area, where he worked as a mine laborer. He then moved to Alpine and lived there until his death in 1935. While in Alpine he worked as a laborer in road construction. He died of Pulmonary Tuberculosis May 24, 1935 and was buried in the Alpine Cemetery the following day. On June 8, 1918 Manuel married Paulina Mireles in Alpine. They were married by Rev. Antonio Alonso (a). Paulina was born in 1899 in Santa Eulalia, Chihuahua, Mexico, the daughter of Elena Moscoro Mireles. In 1920 Elena, a widow, was living with her children in the Terlingua area and in 1930 she was living with her brother, Natividad Moscoro, in Alpine. Elena died at her home in Alpine of congestive heart failure March 10, 1955 and is buried in Holy Angels Cemetery. Paulina died in Alpine August 24, 1994 and is buried in Holy Angels Cemetery. Manuel and Paulina had twelve children:
A. Daughter Cruz Bustamante was born 4 May 1919 in Terlingua. She married Rocky Payne, the son of Monroe Payne and Jesus “Susie” Vasquez. Rocky worked as a cowboy on various ranches in the area. They had five children:
(1). Daughter Nora Payne was born September 19, 1937 in Brewster County. In June 2010 she was living in Pecos, Texas. Her married name is Geron.
(2). Son Rocky Payne, Jr. was born February 18, 1939 in Alpine. He died of Epilepsy January 27, 1958 at his home in Alpine. He had suffered from Epilepsy all of his life. He is buried in Holy Angels Cemetery.
(3). Son Manuel “Manny” Payne was born in Brewster County October 10, 1941. In June 2010 he was living in Alpine with his wife Luisa.
(4). Daughter Suzy Payne was born May 15, 1947 in Brewster County. She married Erasmo Acosta and in June 2010 they were living in Pecos, Texas. See http://www.lifebeforetheruins.com/francisco-acosta.html for their family and more information on the Acosta family.
(5). Son Larry Payne was living in Horizon City, Texas with his wife Pam in June 2010.
B. Daughter Maria “Marie” Bustamante was born February 2, 1921 in Terlingua. She married Manuel “Chito” Espinoza July 8, 1939 in Alpine. By 1948 they had settled in Odessa where Maria worked for many years as a beautician. She died at her home in Odessa August 24, 2011 and is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery. Her husband Manuel preceded her in death. Maria and Manuel had five children:
(1) Son Oscar Espinoza was born April 12, 1940 in Brewster County. In August 2011 he was living in New York City.
(2) Daughter Maria Virginia Espinoza was born October 27, 1941 in Brewster County. She later legally changed her name to Olga and in June 2012 she was living in Austin. Her married name is Magee..
(3). Son Gilberto Espinoza was born November 30, 1946 in Alpine. He graduated from Ector High School in Odessa in 1965. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran with service in Viet Nam. He achieved the rank of Sergeant by the time he was discharged. For most of his adult life he worked as a welder. Gilbert died December 7, 2010 in Odessa and is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery. He married Maria Navarrete and they had six children:
a. Daughter Gio Vonne Mendoza.
b. Daughter JoAnne Cortez.
c. Son Gilbert Espinoza II.
d. Son Gene Dion Espinoza.
e. Son Steven Cortez.
f. Son Michael “Mikey” Espinoza was born March 19, 1974 in Odessa. As an adult he was employed as a welder in the oil fields. He married Becky Castillo. Michael died in Deerings Nursing Home in Odessa October 11, 2007 and is buried in Rose Hill Cemetery.
(4) Daughter Ruby Espinoza was born April 22, 1948 in Ector County. She married Nat “Sonny” Rodriguez and in August 2011 they were living in Odessa.
(5) Son Frank Espinoza was born June 28, 1955 in Odessa. He died in Odessa the same day and is buried there.
C. Daughter Eulalia “Lala” Bustamante was born circa 1923 in Terlingua. She married Jose Muniz in Alpine September 19, 1945. He was born March 19, 1926 in Terlingua. As an adult he worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad and also as a contractor for Ralph Peters and Roy Stillwell. He died in Big Bend Regional Medical Center October 17, 1997 and is buried in Holy Angels Cemetery. Eulalia was living in Alpine in August 2011. Eulalia and Jose had five children:
(1). Son Manuel Muniz was born October 18, 1946 in Alpine. He was a resident of Alpine and employed as a trucker at the time of his death. He died in an automobile accident one mile east of Marfa on August 25, 1968 and is buried in Holy Angels Cemetery.
(2). Daughter Oralia Muniz was born in Brewster County October 3, 1949 and was living in Lubbock in October 1997. Her married name was Vasquez.
(3). Daughter Delia Muniz was born in Brewster County November 11, 1951. She was living in Alpine in October 1997 and her married name was Carson.
(4). Daughter Sylvia Muniz was born in Brewster County July 31, 1954. He married name was Villanueva and in October 1997 she was living in Alpine.
(5). Son Jose Muniz, Jr. died in 1984.
Salvador “Sonny” Llanez, shown as a son in Jose’s obituary, was living in El Paso in October 1997.
D. Son Jesus Bustamante was born October 12, 1924 in Chisos and was baptized there November 23, 1924 by Father S.M. Giran. His godparents were Guillermo and Juana Rodriguez. In August 1994 he was living in Mesquite, Texas. He was deceased by June 2010.
E. Son Jose Bustamante was born March 25, 1927 in Alpine and was living in Odessa in August 1994. He was deceased by June 2010.
F. Son Manuel Bustamante was born in Alpine March 25, 1927.
G. Son Daniel “Dan” Bustamante was born in Alpine January 3, 1929. He graduated from Alpine High School and Sul Ross State University and spent many years in coaching, teaching and administration in public schools. In 1993 he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Sul Ross State University. He retired as Superintendent of Schools in Eagle Pass, Texas in 1989. Daniel died in Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas September 3, 1995. An Air Force Veteran with service in Korea, he was buried with full military honors in Holy Angels Cemetery, Alpine on September 5, 1995. He married Elodia Hernandez June 2, 1957. She was born August 21, 1936 and died July 12, 1981. She also is buried in Holy Angels Cemetery.

D. Son Jesus Bustamante was born October 12, 1924 in Chisos and was baptized there November 23, 1924 by Father S.M. Giran. His godparents were Guillermo and Juana Rodriguez. In August 1994 he was living in Mesquite, Texas. He was deceased by June 2010.
E. Son Jose Bustamante was born March 25, 1927 in Alpine and was living in Odessa in August 1994. He was deceased by June 2010.
F. Son Manuel Bustamante was born in Alpine March 25, 1927.
G. Son Daniel “Dan” Bustamante was born in Alpine January 3, 1929. He graduated from Alpine High School and Sul Ross State University and spent many years in coaching, teaching and administration in public schools. In 1993 he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Sul Ross State University. He retired as Superintendent of Schools in Eagle Pass, Texas in 1989. Daniel died in Methodist Hospital in San Antonio, Texas September 3, 1995. An Air Force Veteran with service in Korea, he was buried with full military honors in Holy Angels Cemetery, Alpine on September 5, 1995. He married Elodia Hernandez June 2, 1957. She was born August 21, 1936 and died July 12, 1981. She also is buried in Holy Angels Cemetery.
Dan and Elodia had three children:
(1) Daughter Paula Bustamante was living in Uvalde, Texas in September 1995. Her married name was Fierro.
(2) Daughter Monica Bustamante was living in Uvalde in September 1995. Her married name was Quijano.
(3) Daughter Danna Bustamante was living in El Paso in September 1995. Her married name was Sadler.
H. Daughter Ester Bustamante was born in Alpine August 27, 1931. She married Noah De Leon. In August 2011 they were living in Lubbock.
I. Daughter Ramona Bustamante was born April 14, 1934 in Alpine. In August 2011 she was living in Odessa. Her married name is Fierro.
J. Daughter Genoveva Bustamante was deceased by June 2010. Her married name was Sanchez.
K. Daughter Mauricia Bustamante was living in Fort Worth in August 2011. Her married name is Sanchez.
L. Son Rudy Bustamante was living in Alpine in June 2010.
3. Son Filomeno Bustamante was born in Mexico November 8, 1898. He immigrated with his family to the United States and by 1916 he was working for the Chisos Mining Co., employee number 282. On October 21, 1916 he exchanged coupons (company script) for $10.00 in cash at the company store. He was still working for the Chisos Mining Co. in 1925, but in 1930 he was living in Alpine where he owned his own home valued at $460.00 and was working as a carpenter’s helper. In 1934 he was again working for Chisos Mining Co. From 1946 to 1947 he lived in El Paso, where he worked as a carpenter for Peinado Construction Co. He died in El Paso November 8, 1957 of coronary sclerosis and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, El Paso. Circa 1917 Filomeno married Barbara Gallegos. She was born in Mexico circa 1901 and was the daughter of Paula Gallegos. She died in El Paso February 12, 1982. Filomeno and Barbara had eight children:
A. Son Manuel Bustamante was born in Chisos September 28, 1917 and was baptized there by Father Antonio Alonso October 28, 1917. His godparents were Agapito Jaquez and Ofelia Rodriguez. By 1935 Manuel was working for the Chisos Mining Co., employee number 957. On August 1, 1935 he stepped on a nail while helping with carpenter work and missed work for four days. On June 15, 1937 he burned his left arm with steam while operating an engine on #8. He was put on half time pay and was off for two days. Manuel died of Tuberculosis in Alpine October 17, 1944 and was buried in the Alpine Cemetery the same day.
B. Son Filomeno Bustamante, Jr. was born 29 May 1922 in Terlingua. In 1930 he was living with his parents in Alpine. He married Gregoria Hernandez in Alpine February 1, 1941. They were married by Justice of the Peace R.C. Garnett. Filomeno and Gregoria had four children, all born in Brewster County:
(1) Son Robert Bustamante was born August 11, 1941.
(2) Daughter Virginia Bustamante was born July 28, 1942.
(3) Son Arturo Bustamante was born April 20, 1944.
(4) Daughter Rebeca Bustamante was born January 17, 1946.
C. Daughter Simona Bustamante was born circa 1924 in Terlingua. In 1930 she was living with her family in Alpine.
D. Son Alfonso Bustamante was born circa 1929, probably in Alpine.
E. An unnamed son was born April 19, 1930, probably in Alpine. He died as an infant.
F. Daughter Paula Bustamante was born in Brewster Co. June 30, 1932.
G. Son Alfredo Bustamante was born in Brewster Co. September 14, 1934.
H. Son Adolfo Bustamante was born May 11, 1937 in Terlingua. He died in an automobile accident on Highway 90 in Valentine on June 2, 1957 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in El Paso.

E. An unnamed son was born April 19, 1930, probably in Alpine. He died as an infant.
F. Daughter Paula Bustamante was born in Brewster Co. June 30, 1932.
G. Son Alfredo Bustamante was born in Brewster Co. September 14, 1934.
H. Son Adolfo Bustamante was born May 11, 1937 in Terlingua. He died in an automobile accident on Highway 90 in Valentine on June 2, 1957 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in El Paso.
4. Son Ramon Bustamante was born August 29, 1901 in Mexico and immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1911. In 1920 he was living in the Terlingua area and working as a mine laborer. He lived in Alpine between 1931 and 1933 and died there of Influenza on February 12, 1933. He was buried in Holy Angels Cemetery the following day by his brother Gabriel Bustamante. On November 7, 1927 Ramon married Santos Granado in Alpine. She was the daughter of Manuel Estrada Granado and Angelita Valenzuela.. Santos was born in Terlingua December 30, 1911 and died there of Pulmonary Tuberculosis on December 31, 1933. She is buried in the Terlingua Cemetery. Prior to her death she was treated by Chisos Mining Co. physician Dr. E.A. Montenyohl. Ramon and Santos had no children.
5. Son Gabriel Bustamante was born circa 1902 in Mexico and immigrated to the United States with his family in 1911. In 1920 he was living in Terlingua and working as a laborer in one of the area mines. In 1930 he was living in Alpine and working as a laborer, odd jobs, but in 1932 he was back in Terlingua working for the Chisos Mining Co., employee number 543. He remained in Terlingua at least through July 1936. On March 16, 1932, while working for the Chisos Mining Co., he fell and dislocated a shoulder while trying to get a pulley down from a rafter at the gas plant. He was off for six days and was given half time pay. Gabriel eventually returned to Alpine where he died July 22, 1950 of cancer of the stomach. He is buried in Holy Angels Cemetery. His wife’s name was Consuela, but her family name is not known.
6. Daughter Petronila “Betty” Bustamante was born May 31, 1909 (b) in Mexico and immigrated to the United States with her family in 1911.In 1920 she was living with her parents in the Terlingua area. In 1930 she was still single and living with her parents in Alpine. At that time she was working as a servant for a private family. She married Mariano Mireles in the early 1930’s. She died of Tuberculosis in Alpine on July 18, 1936 and was buried in Holy Angels Cemetery the following day.
7. Son Jesus Bustamante was born October 19, 1909 (b) in Mexico and immigrated to the United States with his family in 1911. In 1920 he was living with his parents in the Terlingua area. In 1930 he was living with his parents in Alpine and working as a carpenter’s helper. From at least 1934 through 1937 he was back in Terlingua where he was working for the Chisos Mining Co., employee number 749. On October 14, 1937 he cut his left elbow with wire of sheet iron while diamond drilling “700-9-D24”. He was off three days. Between 1944 and 1953 he lived in El Paso where he worked as a mill man for Phelps Dodge Refinery. He died April 12, 1953 after being struck by an automobile in the 3400 block of Alameda in El Paso. This was near the home of his brother Filomeno. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in El Paso. Jesus married Estefana Aguilar in Terlingua on October 15, 1932. They were married by Justice of the Peace Robert L. Cartledge. They had two children:

B. Son Ramon Bustamante was born in Brewster Co. November 29, 1935.
