Taken from “Just Lookin’, News from South Brewster County” by Lucille Muchmore.
We remember Carolina White, 68, a lifelong resident of Terlingua who died May 6, 1996. Carolina and husband Arturo owned and operated the Terlingua Store, located on Hwy. 170, between Terlingua Creek and the ghost town for many years.
It began in a small room as a part of their home and eventually grew into a large building housing the store and a beauty shop. Her store was a welcome place for friends and passersby to stop and visit or open a can of sardines, box of crackers and a can of pop for a lunch at the long table where news stories were told.
Carolina was someone special to everyone who came to know her. Ho one left her place hungry. She convinced many of those who illegally crossed the Rio Grande to return to their homes. She was active in community projects and gave of her time and money.
For the past several years the property adjoining the store has been home to the Wick Fowler-Frank Tolbert Chili Cook-off. Her calm and gentle presence helped to make each cook-off a success.
Carolina White was much loved and will be greatly missed.
